National Law Day

What is National Law Day?

From the American Bar Association’s website: “Law Day, held annually on May 1, is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.”

How does the Riverside County Law Library celebrate law day?

In 2019, RCLL hosted discussion panels around the subjects of “Free Speech in the Era of Fake News”, “Judicial Independence in a Politically Divided Society”, and a discussion on the book Justice in Plain Sight with author Dan Bernstein. View photos from those events here

In 2020, inline with the 100-year celebration of women’s suffrage, RCLL hosted a virtual presentation from The League of Women’s Voters titled, “History of Women’s Suffrage 1848-1920.” Watch the recording here.

In 2021, RCLL obtained the Book to Action grant which allowed us to purchase and distribute copies of Just Mercy* to the Riverside County community. We held a book discussion group and hosted a discussion/Q&A with Obie Anthony, Founder and Executive Director of Exonerated Nation. Watch the recording here.

In 2022, RCLL took a break from Law Day programs to focus on our extensive renovation project in Riverside. However, through our social media accounts, blog posts, and website, we continued to share and discuss all things law day.

2023: On May 1st, 2023, RCLL hosted it’s first in-person law day event since 2019! Several local Riverside County organizations joined us in-person for a resource fair. The event allowed the public to meet people from organizations including: Inland Counties Legal Services, Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association, Riverside Superior Court Self-Help Center, RCBA’s Lawyer Referral Service, Community Action Partnership of Riverside County, Riverside County Department of Child Support Services, Riverside City Attorney’s Office, and the Hispanic Bar Association of the Inland Empire.

*Just Mercy is available on our Lexis Digital Library.

2024: RCLL hosted a virtual RCLL Law Day Panel in honor of Law Day with the Riverside County Barristers and Honorary Jackson Lucky as the keynote speaker to discuss what the Voices of Democracy means to them.
