Gonna get you

Years ago, I was walking down the street when I heard a loud bang on the street.  Turned out that two cars had collided and, as it turned out, one of the drivers was a person I knew.  Standing looking at the accident, Person saw me and asked if I had seen what had happened.  No, I hadn’t, and said so.  Weeks went by and while lounging at home a I heard a knock on the door and was greeted by my friendly neighborhood process server who served me a subpoena to appear in court. Seems Person...

Man’s Best Friend and the Law

The law affects just about every aspect of the world we live in. Pets are no exception. Nolo Press has published a book on laws affecting dogs and their owners, titled Every Dog’s Legal Guide and written by Mary Randolph. Not only is the information in this book useful to current owners, but it also has a section on buying a dog for those soon-to-be owners. This books answers dozens of important questions, including why you should license your dog and what happens if your pet is impounded. The...

You want how much???

Seems sometime actor Sean Penn is seeking ten million dollars against some director (Lee Daniels) for an off-sided comment.  Seems Mr. Penn is tired of playing the victim and wants to live a quiet life.  Seems that in order to live the quiet life, Mr. Penn’s lawyer has to paint a picture showing how victimized Mr. Penn is/has become.  As far as complaints go, this one is a doozy.  Don’t take my word for it, the first few paragraphs of the complaint read like a soap opera: As a result...

Librarians know it all

Have you ever had the experience where you find yourself standing somewhere and you can’t remember why you’re standing there?  See, the other day, I was helping no less than 8 people find things simultaneously (no chance of confusion, there).  Suddenly, I looked up and found myself standing in a isle devoted to all things intellectual property and I whilst holding Volume 6 of Nimmer on Copyright.  Thing is, I could have sworn I was helping someone find something about landlord tenant...

Mine Today, Yours Tomorrow

Few things bother me more that when people come up to me asking about “squatter’s rights.”  I don’t know.  Maybe it’s because I own a home and the thought of coming home after a vacation and seeing someone sitting in my castle – well, that’s really annoying.  Anyway, when I first heard that term “squatter,” I didn’t really know what it was so after a little bit of researching I find that nowadays, it is referred to the more recognizable...

Brace for Impact

The other day, as I was sitting in Southern California traffic, I glanced over at a large dump truck and its driver.  Seems driver had failed to set the parking brake on his 70 ton monster.  Driver leapt out of the truck (which was perched near the bottom end of a hill) onto the pavement below with the truck still moving forward (slowly at first). Really, I don’t know what was going through the drivers mind as he walked away from the truck (now moving faster).  By the time the driver realized...

Transparency In Government – Can It Be A Reality?

Have you ever wondered what transparency in government really means?  Is it really possible?  In an age when massive amounts of information are being gathered and tabulated about ordinary citizens, Americans need to know what  the Government is doing and why.  According to  Random House Webster’s College Dictionary, transparency is defined as, the quality or state of being transparent, something transparent, esp.….some translucent substance, made visible by light shining through from behind… Easily...

New California Laws for 2014

Have you ever had that sneaky suspicion that someone was out to get you?  Maybe you think you saw someone duck behind a tree when you turned around?  Maybe your crazy neighbor across the street with the tin foil hat knows something you don’t?  Well, as it turns out, there is someone out there with fingers in everything you do – your friendly neighborhood California Legislature.  Yep, the California Legislature was working hard all last year to create a new batch of laws for 2014 covering...
